Trek through Georgia and Atsunta Pass

DAY 1:  TBILISI

Upon your arrival to the Tbilisi International Airport, you will be met by OneSeed’s partner operator and taken to your hotel in Tbilisi. Stroll through the cobblestone streets of Tbilisi old town or rest up from your journey. 

Day 2: TBILISI

Spend the day with your guide exploring the city of Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia since the 5th century. Explore old town followed by a cable-car ride up to the 4th century Narikala fortress that overlooks the city. Have lunch at a local restaurant, before walking through the Dry Bridge flea market where locals sell antiques and other old retro vintage items, souvenirs and handicrafts. Continue the tour through the main streets of old town Tbilisi. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner at a traditional Georgian restaurant with folk songs and dances.

Day 3: TBLISI TO OMALO

After breakfast, begin a 6 hour journey from Tbilisi through the Kakheti region of northeastern Georgia to the town of Omalo. Along the way, visit the 11th century Alaverdi Cathedral and travel up and over an adventurous Abano Pass (9,272 ft). After arriving in the town of Omalo, check in to your guesthouse and then head out for a walk around Omalo and a visit to the Keselo Towers, a small medieval fortress located in the town.

Day 4: OMALO

In the morning, head out for a day hike in the Tusheti Nature Reserve and Protected Landscape area. Hike from Omalo to the village of Shenako where you will see traditional Georgian style homes and the village's medieval Trinity Church. Continue on to the village of Diklo, home of the Diklo Fortress ruins. Return to Omalo in the afternoon.

Day 5: OMALO TO GIREVI

After breakfast, travel about 1.5 hours by car to the village of Dartlo where you will begin today’s trek to Girevi, located within two miles of the Russian border. Hike along the Alazani River, passing through the medieval villages of Chesho and Parsma along the way. Spend the night at a guesthouse in the Girevi.

DAY 6: GIREVI TO KVAKHIDI

Begin a challenging day by hiking along the Atsunta-Alazani Gorge, crossing small mountain streams along the way. You will pass by the abandoned village of Chontio and get breathtaking views of the surrounding green fields, alpine meadows, and the river valley. Arrive at the Kvakhidi campsite where you will camp for the night.

DAY 7: KVAKHIDI TO KHIDOTANI RIDGE

Continue the trek along the Kvakhidisitskali River, crossing the river twice. The first crossing will be by a footbridge spanning the river, and the second crossing will be by wading across. Continue hiking up and over the Atsunta Pass (11,253 ft / 3430m). Today will be another challenging day, but will be rewarded with amazing views of the surrounding mountains from the top of the pass. Tonight you will camp along the Khidotani Ridge.

DAY 8: KHIDOTANI RIDGE TO SHATILI

After enjoying breakfast at camp, hike down a narrow gorge and reach the small village of Khone. Continue on to the largely abandoned village of Mutso. While sparsely populated, it still impresses with its amazing natural and architectural scenery. Take a short 1.25 mile side hike to the impressive ruins of the Mutso fortress. Following the side hike, continue on a short distance where a driver will be waiting to take you to the village of Shatili. Arrive to the guesthouse and have dinner before settling in for the night.

DAY 9:  SHATILI TO TBILISI

In the morning, take an easy walking tour of the village of Shatili before getting into a car to begin your 3.5 hour drive back to Tbilisi.  The drive will provide incredible views of the Aragvi Gorge and the Datvisjvari Pass (8,780 ft / 2676m). Make a brief stop at a local family owned winery to taste the wines that have been fermented in clay pots known as ‘Qvevri,’ a Georgian winemaking technique. Continue on to the UNESCO world heritage site of Mtskheta, the former capital of Georgia and an important political and cultural center from the 3rd century BC. Finally, make a quick stop to the 6th century Jvari monastery before reaching Tbilisi. In the evening, head into the city for a farewell dinner.

DAY 10: TBILISI

Time to say goodbye to the country of Georgia. Head to the Tbilisi International Airport to begin your international journey home.
